New Records coming from us in March so watch this space...
PRIMO SYDNEY ROCK ACTION !
big thanks to all you great folk who picked up & supported our recent PROFESSORS 7" from 1978. It was issued in a cool gatefold jacket & pressed on Black/Red & Green vinyl, this first press is nearly out of print so if you need one on those colours to nab one, we still have a few. It's a ripper single that we wish to keep in print so watch for a repress a bit later on in the year. Another of our archive releases from Sydney (1981/1982) by the rockin ' ME 262 /TRANS 262 is also down to it's last lot of the first pressing, so if you love your hi-octane old school Rock Action then grab a copy of this on LP ( Orange or Blue vinyl ) which comes with a detailed A5 Booklet, Two cool Flyer Repro's, a great Colour collage Poster and a hot WHITE FLEXI-DISC 7" with two tracks in a Hand Numbered / stamped sandwich bag. Both these releases are Brilliant Rock'n'Roll & we are stoked to have them as part of the BCR Discography....

There are moments in your life when dates and times become etched in your head and if someone you have known and admired who is no longer around, these become a time to reflect and so it is across this weekend that we think of TIM HEMENSLEY, who passed away 15 years ago and is a much missed individual within the worlds that a lot of us inhabit . A versatile musician, a great writer, a man with an opinion and not afraid to share it, someone who was constantly on the trail of knowledge and who added fire to his cannon on a daily basis, Tim was an individual force & a hoot to be around as time spent with him was always colourful and you could walk away feeling invigorated & a little bit more worldly... As I've said before on times where I have written about Tim, his influence on me personally is quite strong as the DIY spirit he carried within was always in line with mine and he was someone that i saw getting shit done and always seeking to create. Through a very free spirited schooling to having cool as bohemianesque parents, Tim was always going to be set on a wild course and from a super super young age (like TEN) he was incredibly producing his own Punk fanzine and already well ahead of the game in picking up instruments and forming a band (ROYAL FLUSH) so from having such a killer jumpstart to life in a unique and underground culture it was always gonna be decades of incredible output from there.... SICK THINGS, MORBID DREAD, GOD, BORED!, POWDERMONKEYS... with loads of mini add-ons and deviations in between, whether he was helping someone with a demo, organising a record to come out overseas and experiencing thousands of wild live shows on both the stage and down the front as a audience member all around the world and being a deep lover of music and subculture....there was always something on the go with Timmy.... I often think "what would he be doing now" if he was still with us..... He'd be recording bands on the up and coming which he loved and who he saw had true R'n'R attitude, he'd be paying out on those who he saw as horrid and be calling bullshit on them in a hot minute, he'd be involved in areas of Australia's music history, being interviewed, helping out, being a contributor to archival projects and he'd of course still have a guitar in hand and be gruffing it out up close into a microphone. With his folks being heavily entrenched in literature, my guess also is that he would of penned a book or two about things that were close to his heart and which held immense interest.... all these things would of been amazing to see and live amongst & it's a eternal shame that we all cannot experience these active and productive years that would of spewed forth from the great man had he still been with us to this day and reality can be a bummer hit if one thinks about it all too much, as we know there is no way we can rewind and have things turn out in a different light. So all of us miss people who were in our lives, whether they were ultra close or a friend in passing who left indelible marks on our psyche and it does feel good to slow down, stop and remember them sometimes in a life now pushed to the hilt with information and pressure. If you wish to read a swag of Tim's writings from both the early 80's and into the 90's you can find some good stuff within our Tim Hemensley section of the Buttercup site and this will give you a good insight to his thinking, his charm, swagger, attitude and intelligence. He would love the next few 7"s we have coming up and i would of loved to of been able to pass a copy over and have him blast it from his stereo so we'll be thinking his way and as the calendar swings to specific dates in our lives (or not) we take time to remember our good people's influence and how they help to shape our day to day, so thanks Tim (23-11-71 / 21-7-2003) myself and many hundreds of others within Australia and across the globe raise our glasses to you and carry what we have seen and heard from you FOR LIFE. We have launched a second phase of Buttercup Records, tackling overseas releases along with our hefty schedule of New and Archival Australian Releases..
The first cab off the rank is a Previously Unreleased 1969 album recorded in the UK from DARRELL WHITTAKER (based in the UK) & DAVE LOVELAND (based in Australia). Their early musical endeavours sprung from the Sidcup Art School alongside members of the ROLLING STONES & THE PRETTY THINGS, with the notes on the back of the LP telling their story of band comps, near miss auditions into major bands finding their feet, homemade electronics & Instrument building & top of the line self recording.
This is a super laid back, acoustic based gem of inventive guitar picking, chilled vibes & dreamy harmonies across 14 breezy tracks.
Issued in a HAND NUMBERED EDITION OF 200 COPIES, on both Black Vinyl and Split Blue/Red, it's music from a time long past being able to be explored and enjoyed decades down the line. ( BCROS 002)

![]() We are over the moon to announce that we will have a new 2 track 7" from the very wonderful CODA CHROMA out now. Recent UK Review of The Lonelyhearts album by Malcom Carter at : www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk
So many classic albums have been given the ‘deluxe’ makeover during the last few years. I don’t even have to move my head to see out of the corner of my eye the ‘Smile Sessions’ box set and sitting proudly next to that this year's ‘Sgt. Pepper’ CD/Blu-Ray issue (and why did most of the reviews of the latter have so little to say about the glorious 5.1 mix? Surely the major reason for purchase?). So 80's Sydney power-poppers the Lonely Hearts are not as well-known as the Beach Boys or the Beatles. In fact it’s more than likely that some of the members are better known for their later work. Both John Rooney and Anthony Bautovich have played on albums released under the Coronet Blue name. Tom Watson contributed to the songwriting on those albums and Bautovich even appeared on the Orange Humble Band’s classic ‘Humblin’ (Across America)’. To be totally honest the chances are that if you lived anywhere apart from Australia during the Lonely Hearts' tenure they would have passed you by.
Melbourne’s Buttercup Records may not have all the resources that the corporations who are forcing us to shell out once more for those classic albums from our youth have but they sure know how to package an album. The label has taken fourteen previously unreleased tracks from the Lonely Hearts and issued them on vinyl. They’ve added a download card for extra tracks, thrown in a 45 of the band’s first single, a playable postcard, retro poster, plectrum, various other bits and pieces, oh, and a lollipop. It kind of puts even the most appealing major label box sets in the shade…
It’s all about the music though, isn’t it? Most of the time anyway; the sound on vinyl is not the only reason for its comeback. Just taking the fourteen tracks that comprise the vinyl Lonely Hearts album, it’s obvious that this band was unfairly ignored outside of Australia. They make it easy as the sound they make is 100% power-pop, but it’s some of the most life-affirming music you’ll ever hear. They nailed it, simple as that and the only downside is that we’ve been deprived of this music since it was recorded in the early 1980's. Power-pop aficionados will already have chosen their definitive album from the genre, be it from the 1960's, 1970's or 1980's; just one listen to this collection of Lonely Hearts' goodies will find you doubting that choice.
While we can expect any album that comes with a power-pop tag to be full of those trademark catchy melodic hooks and you’re not going to have to dig too deep to find a fine example of the genre, there’s something about the songs on this album that make them stand out from the crowd. It’s blatantly obvious the band are enjoying making this music. It shines through in every song; the love and understanding that they have of hook-filled pop music rings out in every track but there’s also the feeling that for all the blood, sweat and tears that they pour into every song they are not taking themselves too seriously. It’s as though they have hit upon a winning formula. They know it’s an irresistible sound they make so they are just running with it and enjoying the ride to the limit. There’s a feel-good factor from the first to the last second and it’s addictive.
Consider that some of these songs are well over thirty years old; they sound as fresh and urgent as they did when first committed to tape. So they’ve followed the power-pop blueprint line by line and at the end of the day they are not pushing any boundaries but surely that’s the whole point of this music; it’s designed to blow away those blues and make you feel good to be alive and the Lonely Hearts obviously, on this showing, do it more successfully than many of the more famous power-pop artists.
There’s a reason why members of this band went on to play with such respected musicians and power-pop heroes like Darryl Mather, Jody Stephens, Jamie Hoover, Mitch Easter and Don Dixon. This album isn’t where power-pop started but it contains some of the most vital and uplifting songs from that genre. And with most of the songs (with the exception of debut single ‘Last Kiss/Don’t Feel Safe’ and ‘Down Around the Corner’ which are part of the extras) available for the first time ever, this is an essential purchase for not only lovers of the power-pop genre but for anyone who likes their pop music full of hooks, riffing guitars and passionate vocals. ‘The Lonely Hearts’ is beautifully presented and deserves to be blasted out of your speakers this summer long.

LONELYHEARTS -Self Titled LP - I-94 Bar '5 Bottle' Review April 27th 2017 by Craig Barman
If you have a single bone in your body that resonates to the sound of powerful, guitar-powered pop-rock with melody and smarts, take a plunge on this deluxe LP package before it sells out. Rock and roll is littered with stories about “the one that got away”. The Lonelyhearts, more than most Australian bands from the teeming, dizzy time that was Sydney in the ‘80s, can genuinely lay claim to the title. This was a band that came to life in Sydney’s sprawling Western Suburbs and that grew a fanatical local following in their backyard, as well as in the fickle inner-city. There were exceptions (like their Westie peers the Lime Spiders) but it simply wasn’t the way things were done, back then.In quick time, The Lonelyhearts became a mobile party and the support-of-choice for every Australian headliner. Their self-released single (“Last Kiss” b/w “Don’t Feel Safe”) was lauded by no less a judge than Phantom Records’ Jules Normington as one of the best Aussie 45s ever. Major labels courted The Lonelyhearts, one eventually signing them, but somehow they failed to hang around or make a lasting impression outside of the pubs. Why, is anyone's guess. They sure had a lot of competition. They hada reputation as a bunch of guys who cared about their music but not about the busienss. Their story’s better told than I could in the liners and full colour inserts that come as part of the package.
Speaking of which, the first and foremost element is an LP full of 14 strong songs. The first single has been reproduced as a bonus 45 with a picture sleeve and an original EMI custom pressing 45. These have been residing under a band member's bed for 30-something years. That alone would propbably be enough to justify your investment. A playable postcard adds another track - you have to be brave to play one of those suckers - they’re way harder to line up under a stylus than a flexidisc - and the LP is downloadable, with four extra cuts. Plus, there are poster and set list reproductions, a sticker, guitar pick and a lollipop. Sweet! But the bottom line should be, and usually is, the music. If, like me, you only saw The Lonelyhearts fleetingly live, you’ll be blown away by the quality of songs. Take the surging “Another Girl”, the downhearted but sweet “Surrender”, the riff-bound “Breaking My Heart”, the sparkling “Cathy” or the hooky “Fool In Love”.
It’s mostly cheerful, slightly wide-eyed and irresistible pop with that sense of a steely spine that Aussie bands fighting for a place in the crowded live scene back then developed or sank without a trace. John Rooney’s stellar pop vocal sparks off the raw tone of Tom Watson and Dave Guest’s guitars. Needless to say, the engine room (Michael Rooney on bass and Phillip Edwards on drums) is up to the mark, and then some. If this LP proves one thing it’s that The Lonelyhearts were world class and “Last Kiss” was no fluke. Run, don’t walk, and order your copy from the label. As befits a deluxe pressing, it’s a short run of 300 copies. You can buy one copy of the package or a super deluxe version with the LP in threre different colours. Don’t say you weren’t told. www.I-94bar.com

Howard Eynon - So what if im standing in apricot jam LP/ Flexi-Disc 7" (Butt 004)
One of Australia's most quirky, unique & unknown albums from the 70's, this is simply a phenomenal record which may become your new fave cult album ! It's a magical folk album which is fun, melancholic, intense and euphoric all at once ! Recorded in Hobart in 1974 at the legendary Spectangle studios, it took three months and Howard was joined by a host of amazing local players and utilising Violin, Mellotron, Flute, Synths, French Horns, Double Bass, Piano and more to capture a dozen wild tracks. It was originally released by Basket/Candle Records but has been out of print ever since. The record ranks amongst the rarest and most sought after acid folk private pressings. So What If Im Standing In Apricot Jam is a bold and madcap record on a par with Paul McCartney's Ram. The evocative lyrics take in everything from political commentary, to anti-authoritarian jabs, to bright homely humour and deep descriptive stories.
This daffy folksy psychedelic ramble full of tall tales, delightfully quirky melodies, hilarious lyrics and marvellous wordplay, risqué irreverence and beguiling lapses into musical frippery, has not only stood the test of time, but completely and utterly blown it away. We have it on Black Vinyl (Orange SOLD OUT) with a Insert of notes, photos, etc.. and a BONUS AUSTRALIAN ONLY 7" FLEXI-DISC record featuring a previously Unreleased track from 1980 (In a Picture Sleeve too). This got a UK issue as well, with Howard getting over there to play shows to promote it to a new audience all these years down the line. |
